David C. Benefield, Interview, 2002.

David Benefield (b.1939) discusses family ranch in Pincher Creek, near Eureka, Montana, and dry-land farming through the Depression; mother's homestead in Yaak Valley; father's work for J. Neils Lumber in 1940s; childhood including school and work in the 1950s; military service in 1959 as draftee; marriage to Gayla Swenson; work in 1970s clearing timber on right of way for Libby Dam; working for Construction Laborer's Union and other unions; social life in Libby from childhood to adulthood; Libby residents' involvement in local and state politics; work with AFL-CIO; thoughts about effect of environmental movement in area; area bars and saloons; impact of timber, mining and Libby Dam; dust in Libby; air and water quality changes over time; vermiculite on sporting fields and gardens; work for W.R. Grace in 1970s; community knowledge of asbestos; health issues for his family and community; community response to asbestosis crisis including his family's activism; and response of community to his family's actions.
